Possible Tornadoes in North Carolina
![]() |
Possible tornadoes spawned today in eastern North Carolina as thunderstorms formed ahead of a weak cold front. At the time of this writing multiple reports of hail varying in size from .75″ to 2.75″ and two reports of a funnel / possible tornado were received. For fun I have saved two animations of our HAMrad II radar product. The first is an animation of BREF (base reflectivity) only to give you a general overview of storm formation. The second includes overlays above the bref product of watches / warnings, and storm report locations. I always find it fun to view the timing of warning issuances based upon thunderstorm intensification, and the placement / timing of storm reports as both are plotted real-time and overlain onto our radar product. A few samples of storm reports are below: |
| Tornado Reports | ||||
| Time (z) | County | State | Comments | |
| 2110 | MARTIN | NC | POSSIBLE TORNADO (MHX) | |
| 2140 | BEAUFORT | NC | FUNNEL CLOUD REPORTED (MHX) | |
| Hail Reports | ||||
| Time (z) | Size (inches) | County | State | Comments |
| 1902 | 1.00 | WASHINGTON | NC | HAIL COVERED THE ROAD ON HIGHWAY 99 (MHX) |
| 1910 | 2.75 | SAMPSON | NC | A TRAINED SPOTTER REPORTED IRREGULAR SHAPED HAIL UP TO BASEBALL SIZE. (RAH) |

| The blue “box” indicates a thunderstorm watch. Thunderstorm Warnings are the orange polygons, tornado warnings are the red polygons. Storm Report locations are indicated by the dots. Red = Tornado, Green = Hail, Blue = Wind |

[...] the graphic above, where do you think tornadoes might form this month? Recall from one of my posts yesterday that two reports of ‘possible’ tornadoes were received in eastern North Carolina. [...]
